Our visit to Borneo Nature Lodge was part of our 4 night visit to Sandakan. The Borneo Nature Lodge is located inland on the Kinabatangan River, approximately 2 and a half hour drive from Sandakan.

We had a local guide and driver for the 2 day trip. Our first stop was Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilation Centre, approximately a 40 minute drive from Sandakan. We were at the centre for several hours and included the feeding of the OrangUtans. Our entry ticket included entry to the Theatre where an introduction to what is available within the Park, including video presentation.

On completion of our Sepilok adventure we rejoined our private guide and driver for the 1.5 hour drive to Kinabatagan and were met riverside by a representative from the lodge. A 15 minute boat ride brought us to the Borneo Nature Lodge, an eco establishment surrounded by pristine jungle.

The Lodge had approximately a dozen twin chalets, several other dorm type group accommodation buildings, a bar, dining room and several other buildings.

Our accommodation was clean and comfortable, but basic. The dining room was 4 star, good furniture and excellent meals included in the package.

Management informed us that a tribe of monkeys regularly visited the resort and we should always lock our door as they know how to open doors and will enter and cause havoc. We soon had an experience as they were on our chalet roof, then scampering throughout the resort.

Our tour included a late afternoon cruise along the Kinabatangan River in search of local wildlife. We sighted many birds and animals including Probiscus monkeys, eagles, sea birds, etc etc. We also sighted a crocodile lurking riverside. The birdlife was amazing and the guides were able to identify the birds. Hard to get good photos of the wildlife as often they were moving or some distance away.

River traffic was busy as late afternoon is when the wildlife appear riverside. We had the opportunity to take an evening river trip to sight more wildlife but chose not to go.

After breakfast we departed Borneo Nature Lodge for Sandakan, stopping along the way to visit the Gomantong Cave, famed for its edible birds nests'. This was something very different and included a magnificent boardwalk through pristine jungle and the opportunity to sight wildlife before we arrived at the caves. This experience will be covered in a separate blog.
